Nap Time Reviews: The Social Network & Feed

“We lived on farms and then we lived in cities and now we’re going to live on the Internet!”
– Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker in The Social Network

Both my kids are sleeping and I’m watching The Social Network.  <– As soon as I typed that, they woke up.  Ha!  Anyway, I’m pretty fascinated by Facebook.  It changed the world.  In many ways, it’s brought people closer together, and in other ways, it’s caused us to become more isolated.  A lot of people have a lot of opinions, but as for me… I’m a fan.  And I feel like I’m a part of Facebook.  Facebook is MY generation, and actually did you know …

that I am the one who got Facebook at my college??  Before Facebook was open to everyone, but after it was just for Harvard students, it was only for college students.  If you’ve seen the movie, you know that colleges acquired Facebook over time.  Facebook was born in 2004, the year I went to college.  But my school, Benedictine, couldn’t get on.  When I was a sophomore, Facebook took applications from schools, and they would either let your school on or not.  I don’t remember exactly what questions were on the application or what I had to do, but I filled it all out and sent it in.

Someone I didn’t even know thanked me for getting it!  It was right before finals though, so maybe I didn’t actually do the student body a favor with my timing…  Is it weird that I’m proud of this though?!  I’m tickled about it!

As a blogger who’s neck-deep in social media, I feel like I’m a part of this and I’m proud because its such a big deal!

Have you read Feed by MT Anderson?  It’s a Young Adult Science Fiction novel, and I think it’s a paints a pretty interesting and likely accurate picture of where we’re headed.  Smart phones equipped with Facebook are basically the Feed from the novel, but on the outside of our bodies.  The profiles, the messaging aka chatting, the ads targeted exactly to your interests… it’s the same.  In the book, you see how the Feed got its start outside everyone’s body:

“I don’t know when they first had feeds. Like maybe, fifty or a hundred years ago. Before that, they had to use their hands and their eyes. Computers were all outside the body. They carried them around outside of them, in their hands, like if you carried your lungs in a briefcase and opened it to breathe.” – M.T. Anderson

Woah.  I’m SURE I’m not the only one who has drawn this comparison, but it is so crazy to think about the future of technology, isn’t it?!  It’s also crazy to think of how far we’ve come in just a few short years… think about computers, think about transportation!  It’s amazing!!  What’s next?!

  1. I like your nap time review!
Sometimes I think people are too critical of social media and other technological advancements. I actually work someone who makes fun of me for texting! I would be in contact with way fewer people if things like cell phones, texing, facebook, email, and g-chat didn’t exist. I guess it can lead to laziness sometimes (sending someone a birthday fb message instead of a call) but who has time to make phone calls all the time? (Besides telemarketers…)

Also good job on getting facebook to your school, I didn’t know that story!!

  2. The first college I went to was a tiny catholic college and we weren’t on it right away as well. It took about a year before we were on it and I remember all my friends on AIM talking about facebook and I was so mad we couldn’t get on it! We would all fill out those applications constantly and FINALLY we got on it! So I totally get you how it basically changed our lives. My 10 year high school reunion is this summer and I’m all anything I want to know about these ppl is on facebook. LOL
