Reading Mom Blogging for Dummies and getting such awesome encouragement from the author has me really geared up and excited to make this blog AWESOME! (I know what you’re thinking – it’s already so awesome, how could it get any better? LOL Stay tuned and find out!)
So I ‘met’ some other bloggers who invited me to join their group so we can all work on our blogs together. This challenge is based on the e-book, ProBlogger’s Guide to Your First Week of Blogging
which I hear is really great. I am going to be following along with the blog, CEO of Me Inc.
The first steps have a lot to do with planning and brainstorming. I like that. I am kind of wondering how this is going to work since this is not, in fact, my first week of blogging. We’ll see.
Step 1.) Decide on your Niche. [This is something I write about in my e-book, Money Making Momma, a Beginner’s Guide to Making Money on the Internet (Left Sidebar).] I think I need to work on this because it seems to me that my blog might be too… scattered. I blog about a lot of things and I think I need to tighten that up a bit. I’m passionate about motherhood, marriage, Catholicism, art, blogging / writing / technology.
I’ve actually been meaning to talk to you guys about this. I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I’m thinking about disbanding Make Yourself Monday… Eep! Would you hate me? Unfollow me? The thing is… I really do like crafting, but I don’t have that much time to do it. I like blogging, internetting and momming more. I don’t think MYM really fits into my niche. I really do LOVE crafty posts though – especially from you who are so loyal to me… SO what if I changed it? A smooth (as possible) transition into a Mom Blog hop or something like that? What do you think? I am seriously going to listen to your opinions on this so comment below!
There are 5 Foundational Steps to getting your blog started.
1.) Set up an Ideas Folder.
I was JUST posting about this! Remember when I talked about Inspiration Striking? I am already planning on getting a better organizational system set up in 2012. I like physically writing out my ideas in a notebook. It is easier for me to think when my hand is moving a pen across a page. I love seeing my ideas and notes written out. I’m also going to use pinterest. Obviously. ;o)
2.) Brainstorm Ideas Around Your Topic.
Ask yourself questions your blog should answer. Sounds easy enough. Can do. Then, it says, write down at least 5 things your audience must know about the topic. Take one of those and make a “mind map”. OooOoooO remember those brainstorming webs in school? I LOVED those! Definitely can do this!
3.) Choosing a Posting Rhythm.
This is something I think I am pretty good at already. It says to schedule posts and schedule time to work on writing and reviewing blog posts. I post daily as it is and am usually pretty good at scheduling my posts. Lately, I’ve been posting twice a day for some reason. I think I’m most comfortable with one new post every day. It also says to treat your blog like a business. I am all about that!
4.) Plan Your First Week of Content.
Write down the names of your posts where you’re planning them. I DO write down the names of my posts in my planner! I like to be really organized, and I know the importance of having an editorial calendar! Do you plan your posts like that / have an editorial calendar?
5.) Write Your Launch Post.
I really wish I did a better job with this. My first blog post was a picture of my baby and it pretty much said, “I’m off work on maternity leave so I’m going to write some stuff here.” What I should have done was introduce myself, write down the topics I’m going to talk about, the purpose of the topics and how they’re going to help my readers.
I am also supposed to get a blogging accountability partner. I’m working on that one. Misty from CEO of Me Inc liked the point in the book of having an “golden egg” of ideas and that it’s all about “content content content”. I agree with this! I want to actually write, help people and tell stories on my blog!
So good luck to ME and anyone / everyone else who wants to participate in this challenge! Yay for blogging!
