My mom is an avid reader, my dad is not.
My brother and sister are not.
My Hubby’s parents are both avid readers.
His sister is not.
Hubby and I are both avid readers.

Will our kids love reading like we do??  I really hope so!

Her new Book Corner <3
She seems to love her books now.  :o)

We were reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales to my little Cupcakes.  I read her one page right before I put her down to sleep.

I found a great part in the middle of one particularly lovely story, Snow~White and Rose~Red {Who knew there was more to the Snow~White story than just the poisoned apple and 7 dwarfs?!}.  And here is a particularly lovely passage:

“In the evening when the flakes of snow were falling, the mother would say, ‘Go, Snow~White, and bolt the door.’  And then they would sit down at the hearth, and the mother wold put on her spectacles and read out of a great book, while the two girls sat spinning.” – The Brothers Grimm 290
What a beautiful family winter scene!  I think spinning was a process of taking thread and making it into yarn.  I could be wrong.  What would the more modern version be?  Crocheting?  Knitting?  Anyway…
Before I was a teacher and I was student teaching in a 5th grade classroom.  I used to read a from a chapter book after lunch / recess and the kids were able to have some quiet free time.  They could draw, write, just listen, etc.
I think this would be a great idea to do at home.  I could read from a book while my kids draw or craft.  I would love that.  <3  I really don’t want the TV to be on all the time.  And I really want my kids to love reading.
What plans do YOU have for reading in the home, if any?

I am an avid reader (hmm…or at least I was before I had my son) and actually used to teach middle school language arts. Both of my parents and sister are readers. My husband is a reader of comic books. Cash is 9 months old and we can't get him to sit still long enough to read anything! He does have a lot of books and does like to play with them. I'm hoping he will be a reader.

  2. You know what's weird? Amanda was just talking about that story last night. I had never heard of it, but now I have heard it mentioned two times in the last 12 hours! Woah. I bet little cuppincake will be a reader ;)

  3. I love reading! My daughter who is now 11 still loves to read. One thing we did when she was young was read aloud as a family. My hub (who is really not a reader or book lover) would read often and we read Hinds Feet in High Places and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe as a family in this way. Another thing I did was always keep books in the car and everywhere. Even now, she will say, let's go "cuddle read", which means curl up somewhere with books that we now read independently! The last book we read as a family was one by Lauren St. John which we read aloud (hub drove , I took turns with daughter to read) on our family vacation to Maine ride @ 5 hours! ;) Cute pics!

I used to do the same thing with my second graders. I need to pull out some longer books to read to my son.

  7. Love it! G is so much into her books now too. Me and DaDa like to read so I hope she takes to it as we do. Thanks for the linkup!
    Have a wonderful evening!

  9. My mom read to me and my brother all the time when we were little, and I loved it. She didn't mind if we were drawing or something during read aloud time. I definitely don't like having the TV on all the time either and don't ever want that to become a habit with my family.

Jake and I are both avid readers (as are all of our parents) and none of our siblings are. I hope that we're able to pass our love onto our kiddos sometime.

Love the picture of your cupcake with her book. She looks very engrossed.

  10. Lexie Loo, Lily Boo, and Dylan Too! says:

I think if you emphasize how important reading is to your kids, it will become a regular part of their lives. I began reading to Dylan when he was just a few days old. Every single night I would sit down and read to him. I did/do the same with Lexie and Lily. We're up to about 5 books a night, two of which Dylan reads to us. My two older kids absolutely love reading, and Dylan is reading at a higher level than his classmates.

  11. Rachel@I Heart Crafty Things says:

My little girl has that same "Where is Baby's Belly Button?" Book that your daughter is reading in the pictures and it's her favorite! I haven't started reading chapter books to my kids yet but I've been thinking about it. My oldest is in 1st grade and is starting to read on his own now so I think he would enjoy it.

Thanks for linking up to the Mingle With Us Blog Hop this week and for following my blog. I'm following you back. Love your cute cupcake background.
