This is the Type of Parent I Am

This post is inspired by Ashley at Happy Heart of Mine; her post is called Ahhh Parenting, and in it, she talked about the different labels for parenting styles and where she falls in the whole big mess.  I loved it and found myself writing her a big long comment describing my parenting style so I thought I should tell my lovely readers what kind of parent I am!

I am not perfect.
By any stretch.
But I am trying to get as close as I can.  I’m trying to be better.
I have a long way to go to being close to a perfect parent… I don’t even know if I’d call myself a great parent at this point.  I know I’m a good parent though.

I love my sweet little Cupcake so much, so much!

I agree that the whole labeling of parenting styles can seem like a muddled mess of craziness.  So without putting a label on it…

[by the way, don’t get me wrong: I’ve read about all the labels – I’m one of those (as embarrassing as it might be) “BUT THE BOOK SAID…!!!” moms which I know irritates my family sometimes.  It’s almost like I can’t help it.  This is my first time mom-ing and I want to get it right.]

… this is the type of parent I am:

I am a Cupcake Parent.

I love her more than anything, I love her in a way that redefines what I thought love meant.  I love her to pieces.  I love holding her, hugging her, squeezing her, smooching her all day!

I nurture her.
I give her vitamins {Some days I forget} and gerber cookies.
I research everything before she eats it.  The “Forbidden Foods list” seems to vary way more than makes sense but I am a Play-it-Safe parent when it comes to food.

I breastfeed and am apparently going to be an Extended Breastfeeder because I am not stopping just because the calendar says December 2nd.  We’ll see what happens.
I try in futility to teach her sign language, I have her bottom in ‘sposies, I help her learn to self-soothe and try to teach her to be a Sleep-Through-the-Night baby.  I tell her than 6am is way too early to wake up.  She either doesn’t listen or doesn’t agree.

I take care of her when she’s sick and get the boogies off her nose.

I am raising her to be a saint, to love the Catholic faith as much as I do, to treat others with respect dignity & love and to always have heaven be her number 1 goal.  I am raising her to know that God loves her, even when she does something wrong, and to know that He is always waiting for her in the Sacraments, that He’ll never turn her back on her no matter what.  And I’m teaching her that I won’t either.

I sing to her, dance with her, play with her, have fun with her and am so so grateful for her.  Thank God for my precious little baby and our little family.  We are going to have so much fun together!  <3

  3. Jamie, this is so sweet! Made my eyes just a bit misty! Keep on nursing, you're such a good mommy! And I agree 110% regarding passing on your Catholic faith and teaching your little one that Jesus loves her so much! Abigail has that same little rosary, and she walks around the house pressing the cross into her chest! I never taught her this, she just did it on her own! :-)

  4. Awesome post. I have never been a big fan of labels and that includes parenting ones. No one is a perfect parent. You have to do the best job that you can. I know that you and Calvin are great parents. :)

  11. Cute post! I would say that I am a Mommy of 3 and am no where near perfect. And I am okay with that. I love them all to pieces and provide a solid ground to their over all being. I teach them at an early age to help others. To want to give more than you get. To love. To make your own decisions. Honesty is the best policy. And I hope and pray they turn into awesome adults, because to me, they are awesome kids!

  12. LOVE MELISSA:) says:
